It is now official, WATAIN will head out on a full-scale European crusade in October - the Storm of the Antichrist tour - alongside the ancient Asian warbeast IMPIETY. Season of Mist release the upcoming track AVA INFERI "Pulse of the Earth" on the internet (taken from upcoming album "The Silhouette").

AVA INFERI reveals "The first version of this song had a totally different character. The overall feeling is probably the same but the rhythmic structure was completely different. It had an almost floating, ambient kind of vibe to it and was generally more avant-garde than what it turned out to be. We feel that the new version has all the elements that makes AVA INFERI something different, and it's also one of the most powerful songs we have composed up to this point in our career. A true and powerful declaration.

The lyrics on "Pulse of the Earth" are strongly influenced by nature and the forces therein, and furthermore, they paint a vision of the interactions between man and nature. Note that "The Silhouette" in itself is partly devoted to the elemental aspects of our world and that this song represents the earth element, if any doubt...

On this particular song we also use different types of rhythmic or native (diverse) instruments to recreate and achieve a kind of ritualistic feeling. To bring out the message and its essence to the fullest. We also believe that every song presented on "The Silhouette" has its own strength and mission. That each song has its own peculiar twist. An album full of surprises!"

"The Silhouette" will be in stores on Oct 15th and Oct 23rd for the US.

Darkane - Singer Quits (Nuclear Blast August)

Darkane have posted the following statements on their homepage: "The time has come, my friends for me to step down from my position as vocalist of the greatest band in the world! I feel I’ve reached a stand still in the creative process with Darkane and together we came to the decision to let fresh blood into the band for the upcoming fifth album. Darkane is constantly evolving and I’m sure that this ignition will be great for the band. We certainly part ways as very good friends and we’re in fact still working together on finishing the long awaited DVD. Hopefully the Darkane "Layers of Live" DVD will be released this autumn and, in a way, sum up my 7 years with Darkane and be the perfect closure. I feel very honoured and privileged to have been a part of such a great musicianship as Darkane and I have tons of great memories from all we’ve experienced together. I’m really gonna miss it! I want to send out a great big thanks to all the people I’ve met and gotten to know over these 7 years! To all family and friends for supporting me and the band. We can look back at seven great years together with Andreas. He joined us as a stand in for Lawrence on a small tour with SOILWORK and NAGLFAR in March 1999. After the first show of the tour it was clear that he was the guy we were looking for! Since then Andreas has sung on three albums and participated on tours with Darkane in Europe, US, Japan and Israel. We have had a lot of fun together and Andreas has always been the helpful, happy and friendly guy in the band. We sure are gonna miss you, and we know that you´ll reach a lot of success with whatever you do in the future! Chimaira - European tour cancelled! (Nuclear Blast August)

Cleveland's CHIMAIRA have issued the following official statement: "As you may or may not know, we have decided to cancel our upcoming U.K./European run. There's really no way for us to describe our sorrow after having decided to pull out of the Eastpak Antidote tour. It was an extremely difficult decision for us to make, and one that we have been painfully mulling over for weeks now. We'd first like to apologize to all of our die-hard fans, and then to all the great guys (and girl) in SOILWORK, CALIBAN and SONIC SYNDICATE. After nine years and more than 700 shows, we can proudly say that we've cancelled a little more than a handful. Our motto has always been that somebody's got to be either sick or dead before we pull the plug. However, this time that is not the case. No one is sick, no one is dead, and not one of us is even tired. In fact, it's the exact opposite... All six of us are on fire with creativity. And if we don't take some time to let it flow, it could possibly go away. As a lot of you know, the last record brought a lot of unity and excitement back to our band. Our brotherhood is stronger than ever, and we've finally 're-focused.' We need to get back into the rehearsal space and explore some of the song ideas we've got going on right now. This record cycle is certainly not over for us, and we still plan on touring heavily in support of 'Resurrection' throughout the winter, and throughout 2008. We're also not 'writing and recording' a new record right now, so don't get that idea... (maybe an EP??). We've just decided that we need to spend the next three months laying down some material that is flowing through us uncontrollably. We've looked at this decision from every angle, and the last thing we'd ever want to do is disappoint our loyal fans. But as painful as it was, we all agreed that this decision was best for CHIMAIRA's 'Big Picture.' So please be hopeful, like we are, that this decision will benefit us all in so many ways. After all, you've got to strike while the iron's hot. So fear not Chimairians..... we've got a ton of great ideas in mind for the future. Our winter U.S. headlining tour will be some of our best shows to date and you'll see a fire in us like you've never seen before. Exodus - Promise a genre-defining new album (Nuclear Blast August)

Gary Singh of MetroActive.com recently conducted an interview with EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt. A few excerpts from the chat follow: On whether EXODUS' first album, "Bonded by Blood", will be in a car commercial someday: "Hell, 'Deathamphetamine' from our last album was used in a K&N air filters commercial, so we're halfway there. But the next [album] is as sick and dark as anything done before, and we'll continue doing just that as long as I'm enjoying myself." On EXODUS going through a new rebirth: "Look at our last two records. They are amazing slabs of metal, and when you hear the new one, you'll realize that very few bands are able to put out back-to-back to back releases with the fire and intensity of ours. The new album is a genre-defining moment for us and thrash in general, and we as a band feel more inspired and motivated than any time before." On EXODUS' early live shows: "Everyone had a good time, even if they were bleeding. "It's really hard to explain what it was like to people who weren't there. There was a sense of community going on, everybody supported each other and went to each other's shows, when we weren't playing together, that is. It was pretty nuts though. You had [Paul] Baloff and myself tormenting the poseurs [glam metal bands]; general mayhem was the norm, especially at EXODUS shows. It was pretty much a well-known fact that our shows were the most violent you could find anywhere." "ANTHRAX played after us at the Kabuki theatre and they were heckled — something awful. And this is ANTHRAX, not some glam band. But it felt pretty damn great to know you were creating something new."On touring Europe and playing small clubs in the U.S.: " Let's be real. In the States we have to play smaller clubs out of necessity. Bigger markets mean bigger venues, but as long as we have a sweaty packed house, all's well in the world. Turkey was insane, and we've been to a lot of places over the last year or so that we've never been to, like Bangkok, and those shows were amazing. But we haven't played San Jose in a long time, since the old Cactus Club, I think, so this [upcoming show on August 10] should be nuts.

NIGHTWISH -DVD goes Gold in Switzerland!

The latest NIGHTWISH DVD "End Of An Era" has achieved gold status in Switzerland. For 3.000 sold copies of the live DVD in Switzerland, the band can put another gold record on the wall, which anyway is quite full of precious metal discs. NIGHTWISH's new bombast album, "Dark Passion Play", the first one with new front-woman and singer Anette Olzon, is scheduled for September 28th via Nuclear Blast Records. Check out the cover artwork at THIS location. Yet, the "Amaranth" single will precede the album on August 24th. One week later in addition to that, there will be a second version of the single with more bonus songs.

Swedish metallers THE DUSKFALL have unveiled the cover artwork for their fourth CD, entitled "The Dying Wonders of the World". Check it out at this location. Due this fall via Nuclear Blast Records, the new album, just like the last one, was recorded at Uppsala, Sweden's Dug-Out Studios (drums, vocals and the mix) by Daniel Bergstrand (IN FLAMES, MESHUGGAH, DEFLESHED, DARK FUNERAL, BEHEMOTH, SOILWORK) and Promile Studios (guitars and bass) by Michael Hahne. Mac has left the band (Nuclear Blast August 2007)

THRESHOLD’s singer Andrew "Mac" McDermott has decided to leave the band for good.
"Mac's still not been in touch directly but he wrote a statement on the band forum confirming that he's left", states keyboarder Richard West. Former singer Damian Wilson, who already stood in at the band’s shows at Metal Camp and Earthshaker festival, will continue helping out THRESHOLD vocal-wise. "Damian's agreed to do the next shows and hopefully we can work out a way for him to do all the remaining tour dates."

Last Friday a huge crowd pilgered to the home of Nuclear Blast in Donzdorf, a small town near Göppingen, to join the signing session of successful NIGHTWISH. As recently announced, bandleader Tuomas Holopainen and new vocalist Anette Olzon intended to allow close contact with photos and autographs to their disciples for a range of one hour. The crowd was expected to not exceed a number of 500 people, but in short time about 1.000 people were waiting in front of the label ´s office to see the two band members. The loyal NIGHTWISH fans even travelled from countries such as Norway or Italy to the rural area to gain one of the signatures in great demand. The two successful musicians, their management and even the Nuclear Blast crew confessed, to never before have seen something like that in such a vast extent. Nevertheless, Anette and Tuomas were patient and generous enough to give an autograph to every single attendee, so, of course, they had to stay for much more than two hours. During the event the delighted audience could have the exclusive privilege to listen to the new album "Dark Passion Play" and to receive a first impression of the new voice of NIGHTWISH. ATTILA VS. MANIAC

In a move that will surprise many who bought into the rumours that there is no love lost between the two, current MAYHEM vocalist Attila Csihar has joined former MAYHEM vocalist Maniac to record vocals for a track on the debut album from Maniac's new band SKITLIV. Commented Maniac: "Contrary to what a lot of people either say or believe, Attila and I are actually very good friends, and always find rumours about how we are supposed to resent each other quite amusing."

The track, entitled "Amfetamin", also has SHINING's Niklas Kvarforth on guitar. Kvarforth, a close friend of both vocalists, recently joined SKITLIV as recording guitarist. About the track, Maniac said: "'Amfetamin' started life as a pretty disturbing piece of music to begin with. Once Niklas joined in it became even more so, and now that Attila has added his vocals, it's taken on yet another dimension; his voice is used almost as an instrument."

Many people asked us during the last few weeks what Season of Mist's "Underground Activists" division exactly stands for. President Michael Berberian clarifies:

"It's basically bands we wanted to sign but that we couldn't sign with SOM. We always wanted Season of Mist to be opened, to explore new genres, to promote the bands to the best of our ability... It's never been a radical label. The goal always was to make it, if possible, "big", to turn SOM into a key player on nowadays' Metal scene. Underground activist will be the total opposite. It's about the most Necro, the most anti commercial, the controversial bands that we like. Bands that wouldn't fit into the SOM roster.

"Since our roots, our personal tastes and musical history are strongly leaning towards the underground, and that despise the trends and all the changes, we always kept an eye on what was happening there, we decided to take a more active part. To us, it feels like paying our dues to a scene that since the tape trading days, helped most of us to shape our musical taste, and made us want to work in music!

"So expect some obscure reissues and some more signings. Basically, it will be just stuff that, we feel, deserves to be released, to be out there, even if they will only appeal to 0.1% of the most extremists of the Metal scene."

The first Underground Activists release, BESTIAL MOCKERY's "Slaying the Life", is scheduled for release on August 20th and September 18th in North America and Canada.

Once more, they have been a legendary live act: during the traditional Gurten Festival in Swiss Bern CLAWFINGER, the winners of Jaegermeister Rock:Liga, could play another successful show. After the gig that has been recorded and broadcasted by radio and TV, fans have been more than enthusiastic. Loud and happy they ´ve celebrated the Swedish guys during the band ´s autograph session – a session that was, by the way, presented by Visions magazine, the magazine that was the only one writing really bad about the new record "Life Will Kill You". Drummer to sit out Festivals + Tour!

Norwegian Black metal masters DIMMU BORGIR have issued the following statement: "Due to Hellhammers injury (the x-ray report confirms a severe neck prolapse causing his right arm to numb out) he will be unable to play drums for DIMMU BORGIR on the remaining festivals this summer and the upcoming European tour, also featuring AMON AMARTH and HATESPHERE. Hellhammer will go into treatment and a possible surgery for this shortly. Taking his place will be Tony Laureano (NILE, ANGEL CORPSE, AURORA BOREALIS), who also played for DIMMU BORGIR during Ozzfest 2004 and festivals in 2005. We wish Hellhammer a swift and successful recovery!" The European leg of "The Invaluable Darkness" tour kicks off in Amsterdam on September 23rd and will finish in their hometown Oslo on November 6th.

Due to health reasons, AFTER FOREVER guitarist and grunter Sander Gommans won't be able to join the band for their upcoming live shows, including the Earthshaker Roadshock Tour through Europe which kicks off on April 27th. There won't be any replacement during the tour, though. Please find enclosed Sander's statement:
"Lately, when I've been under stress or performing any heavy activity, I get spells of vertigo and debilitating black-outs, followed or preceded by a migraine. The last few performances with the band did not go as well as I would have liked because of these symptoms and I'm afraid it seems to be getting worse. I'm seeking medical advice to try and figure out what exactly is going on so that I can get better and get back to performing as soon as possible. Touring and performing are pretty taxing and strenuous, and I have therefore been advised to remain off stage until this affliction has been properly diagnosed and treated. It's really difficult for the band and particularly for me personally to have to bow out at this crucial time, but I'm afraid it's necessary at this point. I need to follow doctor's orders and take care of myself. I can assure you that my main priority is still AFTER FOREVER and getting back in gear to perform as soon as I am able. Please hang in there and understand that this is a difficult time for me, so some respect for my privacy will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your support and well-wishes. It means a lot!"

Last week the video for GOTTHARD ´s first online single "The Call" – taken from the new album »Domino Effect« (release on April 27th) – has been shot in Nuernberg/Germany. Directed by Martin Mueller from RCN-TV the clip has been shot in the famous Grand Hotel. On 1st of May is METAL DREAM GIRLS DAY. We will choose 13 female and 13 male candidates and invite them to our photo shooting at this year Wacken Open Air. The invitation includes a free three days festival ticket. This year, for the first time, 13 male candidates have the chance as well. We got so many requests from women all over the world, that we decided to create the first METAL DREAM BOYS CALENDAR too.

The new WACKEN METAL DREAM GIRLS CALENDAR 07/08 will be released at 1st of June. It conforms with the 'metal calculation of times'. The calendar starts in September and counts down to Wacken Open Air 2008.

Metallica left the comfort of HQ this week to descend upon the greater Los Angeles area to begin recording their 9th original album. This is the first time they've recorded outside of the Bay Area since they spent an eternity at One-On-One Studios recording The Black Album in '90 and '91. The last couple days have been devoted to each band member working out the right sounds, including Lars who remembered to turn on the snare and Kirk who played a solo! The big, shiny red button was finally pushed today - and the wait begins.

SOM SIGN CHRISTIAN DEATH

There are conspiracy theories which, claim 911 along with the follow up terrorist disasters in Europe, were coerced staged events, perpetrated by secret society globalist elitists plotting world domination and that have given rise to New World Order Holy War crusades. Meanwhile, those are fervently supported by middle America Television Evangelists in their mission to punish the wicked and save the world from so-called sexually perverse acts, drugs, alcohol and Darwinian Science, all the while having an apparent desire to zealously bring about Armageddon.

NEW FLESH!

The legend says that a mythical creature named phoenix could be resurrected from its ashes. It is also says that those who carry the spirit of "burning phoenix" are unstoppable, even by the flames of an "infernal sun", as they possess the "ophidian will" to carry on, beyond all obstacles. But enough with cryptic talks and hints... Let it be known that legendary SEPTIC FLESH have returned! Greek daemons Seth, Chris Antoniou, Sotiris V. and Fotis Benardo are back as they decided that besides their experimentation with different projects and musical paths, the path of the Flesh was not completely explored. And they have more nightmares to share...

SEPTIC FLESH will record their sixth full length album under the flag of Season of Mist. The yet untitled album will carry all the elements that made the sound of SEPTIC FLESH so distinctive. There will be pale, strange guitar melodies, brutal and sharp riffing, the devil behind the mic, and of course the neoclassical arrangements that are trademark of Chris Antoniou.

For that purpose alone, Chris the "gothic maestro" will torture a full orchestra and choir respectively made of 80 musicians and 32 singers! The rest of the album will be recorded and mixed on what has become the temple of the past two musical rituals of SEPTIC FLESH. Yes, once again they have chosen to invade the famous Fredman studios, with the company of Fredrik Nordstrom.

According to the band, this will be ATHEIST's final performance ever in the midwest United States before the band is put to rest for good. The band's featured lineup will include members Kelly Shaefer (vocals), Steve Flynn (drums), Tony Choy (bass), Chris Baker (guitar), and guitarist Sonny Carson (who will be playing Shaefer's guitar role due to Shaefer's long-running battles with tendonitis and carpal tunnel). The rumours going around about Cynic cancelling their appearance at Maryland Deathfest are true। As the organisers of the event, we will state everything that happened as accurately and as truthfully as possibly. All of the necessary steps to confirm Cynic through their agency were taken by us and they were confirmed on November 21, 2006 as the band agreed on our original offer. We were given a definite green light to announce Cynic on the MDF website also in November and all parties involved have known about the scheduled appearance of Cynic at the festival for 4 months. Between December and March there were numerous attemps from our side to contact both the band directly as well as their agency, but each attempt resulted in absolutely no reply or further information given to us. Part of the agreement was that we would pay for the band's flights in advance, but we never even received a reply about it each time we tried contacting the band to arrange the flights. Finally we received a sign of life from Cynic's agency in March asking for us to complete some information fact sheet to help assist them in completing the contract accurately. Shortly after rumours started going around that the band will not be playing the festival as we were not the first people to be informed of such an issue. After writing both the band and agency to get some kind of explanation about what is going on, we still have not received a legit reason and the band didn't even offer a personal message to deliver to the fans who have planned to travel to the festival to see them. They simply forwarded us an e-mail from their agency that said, "unfortunately Cynic will not be playing the festival". We received a very vague answer on the phone from their agency that was simply a waste of time and the agency acted like they don't know why the band is cancelling. We don't believe that one bit, so at this point we don't even care to know the real reason that the band cancelled. We'll leave it to the fans of Cynic to formulate their own opinion about the matter. An agreement was made by all parties 4 months ago, the green light was given to announce the band, but they suddenly cancel 2 months before the festival without a legit explanation. The lack of communication by both the band and agency is extremely frustrating for us and not how we prefer to deal with any band that performs at MDF. We aren't magicians or psychics and can only report the facts about what happened from our side. We understand that some people will be extremely frustrated by this news and you can believe us that we are just as frustrated as anyone. If you want to express your displeasure regarding this issue, please direct it to the band and not us as this has nothing to do with how we handled everything.

As a result of the cancellation, one additional band will be confirmed in the near future. It will not be a band of headlining status and we anticipate pushing up Zyklon one space to headline the second night. Stay tuned for more on that.

In addition, you might've already heard the news regarding Looking for an Answer cancelling their appearance at MDF approximately 1 month ago. GHOUL (Creepsylvania) has been announced to replace them on the bill.

Finally, the bands confirmed for the MDF pre-fest are as follows: PIG DESTROYER, INSECT WARFARE, PUTRID PILE, PISSCHRIST and DEFEATIST. One more band will be confirmed for the pre-fest. The show will take place on Friday, May 25th at Sonar and further information regarding start time and ticket price will be revealed shortly.

Machine Head - The Blackening

Since their outstanding 1994 debut Burn My Eyes, Machine Head has had their ups and downs. They are definitely on an upswing now, and their latest album is the best since their debut, and some may argue it's even better.

The Blackening has all the ingredients: really good thrash riffs, excellent solos, catchy melodies, memorable choruses, a lot of diversity, compelling lyrics and well-written songs. Machine Head is as angry as ever, with cutting riffs and angst filled vocals. But that anger is perfectly balanced by hooks and melody.

Many songs are epic, with several clocking in near the ten minute mark. Even though they are long, there is little if any filler, no noodling and no pretentiousness at all. From acoustic interludes to mid tempo metal to all out thrash, this album has it all. Robb Flynn's vocals are mostly angry yells, but he also has more laid back vocal parts and even some melodic singing. His lyrics are very politically charged and make no bones about his unhappiness with what's going on in the world.

The Blackening grabs you from the first listen, but you appreciate the complexity and depth of what Machine Head is doing more and more with each spin.

Infernaeon - A Symphony Of Suffering

On their debut full-length, the Florida band Infernaeon rise up from the underground and demand to be heard. A Symphony Of Suffering combines the old school death metal vibe of their home state with symphonic black metal usually performed by European bands. The result is an outstanding extreme metal album.

The foundation of the album are the guitar riffs that are aggressive, yet very catchy. You'll also hear some really cool solos. Infaernaeon can assault you with blast beats, but also pull back the tempo into more of a traditional metal style. More than mere window dressing, the keyboards are an integral part of the music, adding diversity and atmosphere to the mix.

The vocals on the album are also really good. Ben Falgoust from Soilent Green and Goatwhore lends his screams to a track, and Keith DeVito (Obituary, Suffocation) is another guest vocalist. Infernaeon's vocalist, Brian Werner (Monstrosity) doesn't really need the extra help, because his vocals are aggressive and extreme and could easily carry the entire album. From beginning to end A Symphony Of Suffering is an powerful dose of blackened death metal, and the only drawback is that it's only 30 minutes long.

Chimaira - Resurrection

After their last album Chimaira had a lot of internal and external problems and were in danger of imploding. They worked things out, changed record labels, and have been rejuvenated. Resurrection is the perfect title for this CD. They weren't quite dead, but Chimaira rose up and have released their best album to date.

On their fourth album the Cleveland, Ohio band have concocted a lethal mix of old school thrash and modern metalcore. They even show a little of their progressive side with the nearly ten minute long song "Six." The songs have great riffs and solos along with monstrous breakdowns and brutal drumming. The keyboards add a lot of atmosphere and give the band a unique sound.

Chimaira is able to go all out with angry lyrics and really heavy music, but also reign it in with a more measured and technical approach. Mark Hunter's vocals are passionate and emotional, but also understandable. Resurrection is an outstanding metal album.

A Conversation With The Judas Priest Guitarist (K.K Downing)

Judas Priest founder K.K. Downing and his bandmates continue to work on the concept album Nostradamus, due out later this year. He’s also the executive producer and plays on a couple tracks of the new Violent Storm album Storm Warning. The band was formed by Mick Cervino (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore). K.K. is an extremely nice guy and was more than willing to talk about the progress of the Priest album, his involvement with Violent Storm, and debunked the myth that his house is also a bed and breakfast.

Chad Bowar: How is Nostradamus coming along?
K.K. Downing: We are working on it day and night. It’s going really, really well. It’s a long project in terms of the length of music. It’s over an hour and a half of music, so for that reason alone it is going to take us a bit longer to pull it together. But hopefully we can offer something unique and wonderful to the world. We’re totally into it. We promise the fans we’ll get it to them as soon as we possibly can. We’ll get a Priest tour together as well.

Are you and Glenn (Tipton) doing the production on the album?
So far that is the way it seems. We’ve been working hard, pretty much nonstop. That’s not to say at some point we might bring someone else in, but we’ll see what we need. If we think we need to, we’ll certainly do that. But I think between Glenn and I we’ve got an awful lot of experience. It’s sounding really good. It’s the closest guarded secret in rock and roll at the moment. It’s a bit different than the work we’ve done previously. We’re looking forward to exposing it as soon as we can.

Obviously writing lyrics is different on a concept album, but is writing the music any different from a regular album?
I think there are a lot of the usual ingredients, but with a bigger spectrum of sound with a bit of a classical element and more orchestrated sounds, which can be extremely heavy if used right. Hopefully it’s going to be pleasing to a lot of people, and that’s what it’s always been about. We’ve always tried to widen the audience of rock and metal and make it more credible to more people, and hopefully we’ll achieve that goal with this project.

How did you become involved with Violent Storm?
We were on tour in Miami, where those guys reside. We got hooked up at one of our gigs. That was back when Ripper Owens was in Priest. We just hung out and had a few beers. It was quite a while later when I was in the south of Spain and we jumped on a plane and went to Barcelona. We watched Mick (Cervino) play in Yngwie Malmsteen’s band. We again hung out and drank a few beers. Mick mentioned that he wanted to put together a solo record and asked if I would play on a couple of songs. He sent the songs to me and I thought they were pretty cool. It was along the lines of the type of music I like, more classic metal. I played on the tracks and sent the tapes back to him. It went on from there. I got more and more involved. There were lots of things that needed to be done to the recording as they were. My years of experience have helped me learn a few things. I took on a producer’s role, rearranging and editing and helping with the mixing. I got more into it and wanted to see how good we could make the record.

Mick has been called one of the best bass players in metal. Would you agree?
Absolutely. He has an awful lot of musical ability. He also has songwriting ability and can play the guitar as well. He’s well rounded. He’s a very talented guy. He was formerly with Yngwie Malmsteen and Ritchie Blackmore, so he’s got good credentials. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the band getting out there and doing it live.

How has the response been to the Violent Storm album so far?
It’s building slowly but surely. You can’t keep a good record and a good band down. They are playing some festival dates in Europe with Heaven and Hell, which will be great exposure for them.

30 plus years into your career is it easier or harder to write songs?
I think the sponge is always being squeezed harder. When will we run out before we are just duplicating what someone else has done? The answer to that is in the combination of what people have to offer in the band. Five individuals when we come together creates something unique. When we will run out of ideas is a very good question. Hopefully not until this record is done! (laughs)

What do you think are some of the most underrated Judas Priest albums?
I think they are all underrated. I think everyone who’s never bought a Priest album should go out and buy one, and follow that up by buying every other one as well! It’s fair to say that even with as long and successful of a career that Priest has had, we still have a long ways to go to be comparable with a lot of bands that have gotten a much bigger audience, whether it’s Queen or Gun ‘N Roses or Metallica or AC/DC. We are not considered underground by any means, but Priest is still climbing the ladder in a lot of respects. For that reason I think we’re still doing it. We’re still hungry. It would have been great to have been a Led Zeppelin, where your first album is bigger than sliced bread. The good thing about Priest is that we’ve always been building and hopefully getting better. But then again, we’re not over and done with yet, while a lot of those other bands are.

A Conversation With The Judas Priest Guitarist

In addition to the technology changes and the internet, there have also been musical changes. I’ve been around long enough to witness the evolution of rock music and metal music from the ‘60s all the way to the present time. I’ve seen lots of waves of different trends. In metal the big change was from the end of the ‘80s early ‘90s when it was classic or pure metal changing to the newer metal. Whether it changes back remains to be seen. The good news is that a lot of the great veterans are still around, like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc. We’re still hoping for a massive revival of the brilliant ‘70s and ‘80s. That would be pretty cool.

It seems like bands are under a lot more pressure today for instant success. Would Judas Priest have been given the chance to develop as you did if you were first signed in 2007?
That’s a good question. The industry has changed dramatically. In the old days you would go on tour to sell records. Most bands didn’t make money on tour. You put all the money into production hoping you’d have a hit record and make some money from it. But now it’s turned around. Now the industry is suffering from downloads and things like that. You make the records so you can go on tour, which is a turnaround. I don’t know if Judas Priest would have been in a position to make those extra records, but I certainly do know a lot of bands now don’t know if they will be able to make that follow up record to their first record. I see a lot of that going on.

I was reading in your Wikipedia entry that your house in England, Astbury Hall, is also a bed and breakfast. Is that true?
No. That is quite ridiculous. I live on my own in a very large house, but I love it. I bought it because it’s in a secluded location and I like to make serious amounts of loud noise. I can really turn up my Marshalls really loud in this place. It’s a big old Victorian house. Everybody said I was mad when I purchased it. It had some land with it, and I bought all the surrounding land, about 450 acres. Now it’s about 720 acres. I do have permission to eventually convert it to a hotel and leisure complex. Maybe when I struggle to get up these four flights of stairs, who knows? For years when I was a struggling musician I lived in just one room, so it’s good to have a house with a recording studio and gym and everything I want. So it’s not a bed and breakfast, but if anybody wants to come and stay, they are more than welcome!

French thrashers LYZANXIA has been added to the second part of The Haunted's European tour with Municipal Waste in April-May 2007.

Yesterday, The Haunted recorded 15 songs in the studio for the swedish national radio P3. The recording will be aired during 90 min on wednesday march 14th at 21.30, together with exclusive interviews. Check back here for a link to the streaming web radio next week.

NEW PARADISE LOST TRACKS POSTED ONLINE 03/27/2007

PARADISE LOST, the godfathers of gothic metal, have posted a medley of two new tracks, “The Enemy�? and “Beneath Black Skies,�? to their official MySpace page www.myspace.com/paradiselostuk. The tracks are taken from the group’s phenomenal forthcoming release, In Requiem, which is set for a June 5th U.S. release.

The album, produced by Rhys Fulber (Fear Factory, Front Line Assembly) and mixed by Mike Fraser (Slipknot), marks a return to their heavy trademark sound. Their melancholic atmosphere is as oppressive as ever, but on this go round, the gloom is fused with an equal amount of dense, punishing riffs. Never ones to rest on their laurels, the group brings something new to the table with each successive album, and In Requiem is no exception.

Few bands can match PARADISE LOST’s storied career album for stellar album. Even fewer bands can say they helped found an entirely new genre of music, something these Brits achieved in 1991 with the release of Gothic. As wildly influential as the band has been to bands like HIM and The Rasmus, they remain as relevant as their modern followers through subtle reinvention and a continued dedication to quality songcraft.

ARCH ENEMY Complete Drum Tracks for new album;Post Photos and video

Having announced the return of original guitarist Christopher Amott, ARCH ENEMY have now commenced the recording process for the much anticipated follow-up to 2005’s Doomsday Machine, the band’s most successful album to date. They have once again enlisted the duties of acclaimed producer Fredrik Nordström (Dimmu Borgir, In Flames) at Sweden’s Studio Fredman, where the band recorded all of their albums through Wages Of Sin (2001).

Daniel Erlandsson (drums) checks in with an update on the recording process: “Greetings all Arch Enemies! As you might know, we are currently recording our new album at Studio Fredman. It's been a very smooth ride so far, and working with engineers Fredrik and Patrik has been fantastic - these guys are pros! All the drum tracks are now completed. We recorded a total of 11 new tracks, plus some other extras that I'm sure you will hear about at a later point.
